¡Bienvenidos! Welcome!
In the summer of 1973 two Hispanic men (Deacon James Campos, deceased and Deacon Jose Romo, senior status), who went through deacon formation in the Archdiocese of Detroit, were ordained to the Order of Deacon for the Diocese of Toledo. That same year, the first deacon formation class was organized by the first Director of the Permanent Diaconate, Reverend Cleo S. Schmenk. They were ordained in 1974. Since that time the diaconate has flourished and has provided faithful, committed ministry and leadership to the Catholic community throughout the Diocese of Toledo.
Today we are blessed with 190 deacons. Of these, 97 deacons are actively assigned to serve in parishes, institutions and diocesan ministries. Ten (10) deacons are presently serving in other dioceses around the country. Finally, eighty-two (82) deacons are now enjoying senior status and although they are retired, many of these men continue to offer ministry as able.
We welcome the deacons and their families to this site. Here, you will find answers to questions or specific interests that address the life and ministry of the deacon. We also welcome all who want to explore the possibilities of a vocation to the Order of Deacon.
