The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe remembers the miracle of the Blessed Virgin appearing to Juan Diego in 1531 in the new city now called Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Blessed Virgin appeared over several days to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill asking him to go to the bishop and have a temple built on the hill. When the bishop requested a sign as a proof of the vision, the holy Mother told Juan to pick the roses from the hill and take them to the bishop.
When Juan Diego presented the roses to Bishop Zumarraga they fell out of his cloak and on the cloak was the exact image of the Virgin that had appeared on Tepeyac Hill. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of the Americas and the celebration in her honor is held every year on the 12th of December.
The celebration at St. Caspar in Wauseon is open to all. For more information, call the Office of Hispanic Ministries at (419) 244-6711, ext. 504 or 1-800-926-8277, ext. 504.
