REGARDING: DIOCESE OF TOLEDO PARISHES AND SCHOOLS CELEBRATE FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI WITH BLESSING OF ANIMALS

EVENT DATES
AND TIMES:   Multiple: see below

PLACE: Multiple parishes and schools throughout Diocese of Toledo

POINTS OF INTEREST:

Christians everywhere will celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on or around October 4 by having their pets blessed in the spirit of this patron saint of animals and ecology. Pope John Paul II proclaimed St. Francis of Assisi the patron saint of animals and ecology in 1979 because of his love and respect for all creatures.

A blessing of the animals is usually celebrated outdoors where the pets are also sprinkled with holy water.  Parishes welcome animals, large and small, from the domesticated dog and cat to guinea pigs, horses, goats, lizards, fish, birds and crickets!

An example of the blessing is as follows:
“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”
