Join us for keynote speaker Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory, Archdiocese of Atlanta

Archbishop Gregory tells the compelling story of how, as an “unchurched” child growing up in inner city Chicago, his life was profoundly changed when he enrolled at St. Carthage School and decided at age 12 to become a priest. The first African-American president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Gregory is a social justice leader and strong advocate of Catholic schools in the inner city.

Two individuals will be honored at the event. The Urban All-American Award is awarded to those graduates of a CCMT school who have achieved extraordinary success in their personal and/or professional lives. This year’s honorees are: Dr. Sharon Desmond, associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, (1969 graduate, St. Angela Hall) and Ms. Helene Sheets, Director of College Relations at Lourdes College (1980 graduate, Ss. Peter & Paul School).

The CCMT Service Award is usually presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to Catholic education in the central city. This year’s recipient is not an individual, but an institution that has sent volunteers to CCMT schools for 25 years: the St. John’s Jesuit High School and Christian Service Program, under the direction of Phil Skeldon. This year 57 young men from St. John’s are providing more than 1,300 hours of tutoring and mentoring during the school day at the CCMT campuses.

Also included in the evening’s program are two students at CCMT schools and winners of the CCMT essay contest. Each one will read her essay about the teacher or staff member who has influenced her life and faith. Eighth grader Emma Rahn was inspired by Mrs. Sandy Light, an aide at St. Charles Borromeo School, who taught her about perseverance and the importance of hard work. Margo Watterson, an 8th grader at Queen of Apostles School, wrote about the impact her school secretary, Mrs. Sue Alessandrini, had on her spiritual life.
