Activities and celebrations planned for several Metro-Toledo schools


 January 27, 2006 – Toledo, OH - Catholic schools across the diocese and across the country are celebrating “Catholic Schools: Character. Compassion. Values” during Catholic Schools Week January 29 – February 4.


According to the National Catholic Education Association’ s United States Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools 2004-2005: The Annual Statistical Report on Schools, Enrollment and Staffing, 2,420,590 students are enrolled in 7799 Catholic schools across the country, employing 160,153 full-time professional staff people. 


In the diocese of Toledo, 54,045 students are enrolled in Catholic education including seminaries, colleges and universities, high schools, elementary schools, special schools, religious education (C.C.D.) and pre K-8. The diocese employs 444 full-time academic teachers in the 19 county diocese.
Several Toledo schools have planned activities for Catholic Schools Week: 
 

St. Joan of Arc Toledo

Monday, January 30- “Character. Compassion. Values: In Our Community” Students may wear slippers to school if they bring in a new pair to donate to a local adult care facility.
Tuesday, January 31 – “Character. Compassion. Values: In Our Nation”  Each grade will decorate their classroom doors with a patriotic theme and the students may show their patriotism by wearing red white or blue 
Wednesday, February 1 – “Character. Compassion. Values: In Our Students” Students may wear jeans and are encouraged to bring in a canned good to donate to a local soup kitchen.
Thursday, February 2 – “Character. Compassion. Values: In Our Vocations” Students will be creating Valentine’s cards to give to retired priests, nuns and brothers who have served in the community.

Monday, January 30 – Salute America Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue today
Tuesday, January 31 – “Sock it to Catholics” Students are encouraged to wear crazy and mixed socks
Wednesday, February 1 – “Hats On” Students will be allowed to wear hats to school today. 
Thursday, February 2 – “Join In Celebration” 8:15 am School wide Mass with parents of all students invited to attend
Friday, February 3 – “Student Appreciation” Students may wear jeans to school if they donate $1 to be given to a local charity.

Friday, February 3 – 10 am Bishop Blair will preside over mass for the school that will be followed by a luncheon for the Bishop and all the students.

All Saints Rossford

Sunday, January 29 – students will pass out candies with notes of thanks to all member of the community who support Catholic education after each Mass. 
Monday, January 30 – “Penny Challenge” The students will collect pennies to raise money for Leukemia research. Students will also enjoy a visit from Apex ministries at 1pm in the gym.
Wednesday, February 1 – “Hats Off to Teachers” Students and staff are invited to wear hats, and later the teachers and staff will be treated to a luncheon in appreciation of their service to Catholic education. 
Thursday, February 2 – “Celebrating Families” Parents are invited to attend a Mass for the Feast of Candlemas and then to visit their child’s classroom for the morning. 
Friday, February 3 – “Celebrating Students” Students are allowed to wear jeans today and they will enjoy a picnic lunch with family groups and then to participate in variety of fun activities.

Gesu Toledo

Sunday, January 29 - Presentation to Fr. James Cryan as Distinguished Graduate of Gesu School at 11:30 Mass. There will also be a reception following mass in the Sullivan Center.
Tuesday, January 31  - Students will enjoy a presentation by Apex ministries from 9am-10am in the Sullivan Center
Wednesday, February 1 – Students will write letters to State and U.S. representatives saying thank you for their support of Catholic education. A first grade parent will also come in to speak to the students about his experiences in Iraq. 
Thursday, February 2 – Students are allowed to wear jeans and Gesu apparel today as they attend a school pep rally at 1:30pm. The new name of the school mascot will be announced at the pep rally.
Friday, February 3 – Students will participate in a school wide Mass to celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise and the blessing of throats.

St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Toledo

Monday, January 30 – New priest, Fr. Chris Kardzis, will share with the students his experience with missionaries in Zimbabwe.
Tuesday, January 31 and Wednesday, February 1 – Grandparents are invited into the classrooms and will attend a performance by the St. Pat’s Student Choirs. 
Friday, February 3 – Students and parents will attend an all-school Mass and tour of the Church Narthex to view the “Compassion Character Values” bulletin board. Each family in the school is providing their own pre-drawn decorated person with the values of their family illustrated, written or creatively displayed. The school will also present to Dr. Richard A. Paat the Distinguished Graduate Award for his humanitarian work with victims of the recent hurricanes. 
 

St. Catherine of Siena Toledo

Monday, January 30 – “Kick-Off Assembly” 
Tuesday, January 31 – Students will be making quilt squares that show why they like St. Catherine’s or what their Catholic education means to them.
Wednesday, February 1 – “Crazy Hat Day” Students may wear homemade or decorated crazy hats to school. 
Thursday, February 2 – Students are encouraged to bring in gently used toys and books to donate to a local charity. 
Friday, February 3- Students will participate in Mass, and honors assembly for grades 5-8, and students will be treated to a movie in the afternoon.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Toledo

Monday, January 30 – “Parent Appreciation Day” Students will present their parents with treats and letters of appreciation they made to say thank you for their Catholic education. 
Tuesday, January 31 -  “Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day” The Parent schools Association will be providing lunch for the teachers and staff. 
Wednesday, February 1 – “Student Appreciation Day” Students will be allowed to wear jeans and will not receive any homework today. In the afternoon students will enjoy a yo-yo performance. 
Thursday, February 2 – “OLPH Appreciation Day” Students are encouraged to wear their school’s attire and will be attending an all-school mass. 
Friday, February 3 – “Job Fair and Career Day” Kindergarten through sixth grade will have two speakers come in to each classroom to talk about the jobs they do or the careers they have.  The junior high students will gather in the gym for a "Job Fair" where speakers will introduce themselves to the group, speak briefly about what they do, then students will travel to the speakers at their tables to learn more about their careers.

Blessed Sacrament Toledo

Monday, January 30 – “Teacher Switch Day” Teachers will draw names and switch classrooms for part of the afternoon. 
Tuesday, January 31 – ‘Music to Our Ears Day” Students will enjoy a performance by the Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet.
Wednesday, February 1 – 9am All-School Mass. Following Mass, someone from Vin Devers' Dodge will present a check to the school from a fundraiser called Dodge Drive for Kids that was held in the Fall and sponsored by our Parent Association. 
Thursday, February 2 – “Variety Show Day” Sponsored by student council, students auditioned to be a part if the variety show that will be held at 1pm for the students and again at 7pm for the parents.
Friday, February 3 – “CAP: Care About People Day” For a one dollar donation students and staff may wear a hat to school. All donations will be given to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society to help children in Ohio who have cancer.

Monday, January 30 – Regina Coeli will be focusing on Saints to celebrate Catholic Schools Week and each class will choose a saint and create a poster to hang on their classroom door for the entire week.
Wednesday, February 1 –Students will celebrate the 100th day of school with dancing, music and counting all day long. 
Thursday, February 2 – 7am Parents are invited to a thank you breakfast of donuts, coffee and juice. 
Friday, February 3 – All-school Mass

Sacred Heart Toledo

Monday, January 30 – “Character in Every Sacred Heart Student” Students may dress up as a character from a book or video who demonstrates character, compassion or values.  Students will bring in the book or video and share how their characters impressed them.
Wednesday, February 1 – “We value Sacred Heart Students” Students are allowed to dress down today and will be treated to a movie and popcorn.
Thursday, February 2 – “Sacred Heart Students Have Compassion” Each student will bring in a new book to be sent to a school in Louisiana and baby items to be donated to Heart Beat of Toledo.
