Activities and celebrations planned for several area Catholic schools January 27, 2006 – Toledo, OH – Catholic schools across the diocese and across the country are celebrating “Catholic Schools: Character. Compassion. Values” during Catholic Schools Week January 29 – February 4.
According to the National Catholic Education Association’ s United States Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools 2004-2005: The Annual Statistical Report on Schools, Enrollment and Staffing, 2,420,590 students are enrolled in 7799 Catholic schools across the country, employing 160,153 full-time professional staff people.
In the diocese of Toledo, 54,045 students are enrolled in Catholic education including seminaries, colleges and universities, high schools, elementary schools, special schools, religious education (C.C.D.) and pre K-8. The diocese employs 444 full-time academic teachers in the 19 county diocese. Several schools have planned activities for Catholic Schools Week:
St. Anthony of Padua Columbus Grove
Sunday, January 29 – Students will participate in all weekend masses and following the 11am Mass until 1:30pm there will be an Open House featuring science projects, and book reports of the students and a square dance demonstration at 12:30pm. Monday, January 30 – “School Pride Day” Students will be encouraged to wear their school colors and they will be writing letter to their parents thanking them for their Catholic education. Tuesday, January 31 – “Luau Day” Students will wear Hawaiian attire and leis and the 8th graders will challenge the faculty to a beach ball volleyball tournament later in the afternoon. Wednesday, February 1 – “Dress Up Day” St. Anthony’s will join the students from the other Putnam County Catholic schools for an Apex assembly. Thursday, February 2 – “Country Day” Students may wear their country western gear and will be treated to a movie and popcorn in the afternoon. Friday, February 3 – “Winter Olympics Day” The afternoon will be filled with winter activities including sled races, snow sculptures and games all culminating with a hot cocoa and s’mores party.

St. John the Baptist Payne
Monday, January 30 – Students will show pride in their school by wearing their schools colors. Guest speaker Dwayne Renollet for AEP will be giving a demonstration about safety and electricity in the afternoon. Tuesday, January 31 – A seminar titled: Save our Eyesight will be presented by a group from Dayton in the parish hall. Many hands on activities are planned for the day. Wednesday, February 1 – Wednesday is Guest Hot Lunch day. Each student invites one guest to share a special recipe of Cavatina made by the Parent Teacher Association. Each classroom has a special demonstration to share with their guests and the school. Thursday, February 2 – Con Shuherk from Edy's ice cream will show a film on the making of ice cream topped with a special treat of Edy's ice cream for all to share. Fifth and sixth graders will also share with the rest of the school the Saint’s names they have chosen for their confirmation in March. Friday, February 3 – Students will participate in a Jump-A-Thon with non-stop jumping until the dismissal bell for pledges received to donate to the American Heart Association. They are hoping to top the past record of $1635.50 raised last year.
