ROSARY CATHEDRAL TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATE FROM LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COUNCIL OF NORTHWESTERN OHIO


May 11, 2007 – Toledo, Ohio – Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral will receive an Excellence in Preservation Award from the Landmarks Preservation Council of Northwestern Ohio for its effort in preserving and restoring the architectural heritage of Northwest Ohio. The cathedral will be presented a certificate of appreciation at an awards reception on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at 6 p.m. at 20 North Gallery, 18 North St. Clair Street, Toledo.

Excellence in Preservation Awards include Bronze plaques given to buildings that meet the criteria for being on the National Register of Historic Places and have been restored or well maintained over the last ten years, and certificates of appreciation that recognize people, organizations, and businesses that have taken care of their buildings, recorded the architectural heritage of an area or promoted historic preservation. Rosary Cathedral will receive the certificate of appreciation for its recent development of a parking lot for its congregation. Drawing on the architectural heritage of the Old West End, the fence and landscaping complement the historic district.

Rosary Cathedral was completed in 1931 and stands as the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo. As the mother church of the 131 parishes of the diocese, Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, leads the way as a twentieth century, renovated house of worship, while remaining an American-Medieval Cathedral of Spanish Plateresque style.

The Diocese of Toledo, established April 15, 1910 encompasses 8222 square miles in a mixture of urban and rural areas that spans 19 counties across Northwest Ohio, serving 306,532 Catholics. The diocese includes Allen, Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Wood and Wyandot counties.
