Novena of the Holy Spirit: Pentecost in Our Time - Day Nine |
|
The following novena is based on traditional prayers, and is centered on the gifts associated with the Holy Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord). These form a supernatural framework through which the Holy Spirit moves us from within, by conforming us to the very mode of his own action. Also reflected in the novena are the so-called “fruits” or perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as a pledge of eternal glory. These are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control and chastity. Both the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit are ordered to the mission we have as baptized Christians to live and proclaim our new life in Christ.
Ninth Day: Lord and Giver of Life, Paraclete - Saturday, May 10, 2008 (Saturday of the Seventh Week of Easter) Leader: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, Response: Enkindle in them the fire of your love.
Leader: Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
Response: And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Leader: In the Trinitarian plan of our salvation, the Father draws us to the Son, whom the Holy Spirit reveals and disposes us to welcome. As “the Lord and Giver of Life,” the Holy Spirit brings about our rebirth in Baptism as the Father’s adopted children in Christ and as sharers in divine life. Jesus calls the indwelling Holy Spirit our “Paraclete,” which literally means “one who stands beside us” as a counselor, consoler, advocate and friend. Finally, the Holy Spirit leads the Church into “all the truth,” and is the source and dynamic force of the Church’s unity and mission. It is no wonder, then, that in every age the fruitfulness of the Church depends on the renewal of the mystery of Pentecost in the minds and hearts of believers. This is the renewal that we seek in our novena. May the Holy Spirit rekindle the grace of baptism and Confirmation in every Catholic of our diocese, so that all may live the Christian life with fervor and zeal.
Leader: Let us pray.
All: Spirit of the Father, Spirit of Love, enlighten us, strengthen us, guide us, comfort us. Spirit of the Father and of the Son: You who pray and act in us, make us know the Father by contemplating his Son so that we may proclaim that they are love. Make our life a sign of love. Make us a living word, a sanctifying presence, a consecration of the world to the Father of every gift, to the Father of all love. Amen.
Leader: Mary, Star of Evangelization,
Response: Pray for us.

Pentecost Sunday: May 11, 2008
Acts 2:1-4 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Pentecost Sequence O HOLY SPIRIT! Lord of light! From your clear celestial height Your pure and beaming radiance give.
Come, thou Father of the poor! Come, with treasures which endure! Come, thou light of all that live!
Thou of all Consolers best, Visiting the troubled breast, Dost refreshing peace bestow.
Thou in toil art Comfort sweet, Pleasant coolness in the heat, Solace in the midst of woe.
Light immortal! Light Divine! Visit thou these hearts of thine, And our inmost being fill.
If thou take your grace away, Nothing pure in man will stay; All his good is turned to ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness, pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away.
Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on those who evermore Thee confess and thee adore, In your sevenfold gifts descend.
Give them comfort when they die; Give them life with thee on high; Give them joys which never end. Amen. |

Catholic Communication Campaign: May 17-18 |
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN ANNUAL COLLECTION MAY 17-18 The diocesan communications office asks for your help in the upcoming Catholic Communications Campaign. Although it has existed for 25 years, this may be the first time many of you have heard of this campaign, that over the years has spread the Gospel message through the internet, television, radio, and print. For most of us, our days are not complete until we’ve checked out our favorite website, read the newspaper, listened to our favorite radio station, or caught the evening news before heading to bed. Pope Benedict XVI in his message on World Communications Day 2008, speaks of transforming communications to reflect the message of the Gospel saying, “Yet it is a task which to some degree concerns us all, because we are all consumers and operators of social communications in this era of globalization. The new media – telecommunications and internet in particular – are changing the very face of communication; perhaps this is a valuable opportunity to reshape it, to make more visible.” The Catholic Communication Campaign takes up this goal both on a national level and right here in our diocese. Locally, the campaign paid for and supports the Diocesan and Catholic Chronicle websites, it supports the efforts of local Catholic Radio stations in the Toledo and Mansfield areas, provided funds for a documentary on the ecumenical pilgrimage to Germany and Italy by Catholics and Lutherans in Northwest Ohio, and purchased new computers and software for the Catholic Chronicle.. Nationally, the campaign helps fund Catholic radio programs and daily scripture readings available on the diocesan website. This year, the “For Your Marriage” website, a tool for married couples and those thinking about marriage was launched by this campaign. This year’s collection date is May 17th and 18th. In the past several years this collection was included within the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year, the collection is separate and is supported solely through an annual parish collection that merits our continued support. Half of the money from the collection stays right here in our diocese. Your help is needed to continue many important projects from the diocesan communications office. Please make a donation to the Catholic Communication Campaign.Your strong support will insure the continued availability of media resources that promote Gospel values and foster the pastoral teachings of the Catholic Church.
